The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers (Wiley Finance)

An innovative new valuation framework with truly useful economic indicators

The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers shows how the ubiquitous financial reports have become useless in capital market decisions and lays out an actionable alternative. Based on a comprehensive, large-sample empirical analysis, this book reports financial documents’ continuous deterioration in relevance to investors’ decisions. An enlightening discussion details the reasons why accounting is losing relevance in today’s market, backed by numerous examples with real-world impact. Beyond simply identifying the problem, this report offers a solution—the Value Creation Report—and demonstrates its utility in key industries. New indicators focus on strategy and execution to identify and evaluate a company’s true value-creating resources for a more up-to-date approach to critical investment decision-making.

While entire industries have come to rely on financial reports for vital information, these documents are flawed and insufficient when it comes to the way investors and lenders work in the current economic climate. This book demonstrates an alternative, giving you a new framework for more informed decision making.

  • Discover a new, comprehensive system of economic indicators
  • Focus on strategic, value-creating resources in company valuation
  • Learn how traditional financial documents are quickly losing their utility
  • Find a path forward with actionable, up-to-date information

Major corporate decisions, such as restructuring and M&A, are predicated on financial indicators of profitability and asset/liabilities values. These documents move mountains, so what happens if they’re based on faulty indicators that fail to show the true value of the company? The End of Accounting and the Path Forward for Investors and Managers shows you the reality and offers a new blueprint for more accurate valuation.

Understanding Accounting for Small Businesses: An Essential Guide to Business Finance, Accounts, and Financial Jargon

Business owners need good accountants and, in return, accountants deserve to have good business owners. By ‘good’ I mean informed people who are committed to their business, and are willing to learn. The only problem is that the terms used in the world of business accounting and finance often get in the way. This book is not written by an accountant, it has been written by a small business owner. It will help you to understand, interpret, and communicate with one of your most valued advisors: your accountant. Whatever business you operate, you will have to deal with accounts and business finance. This book is written for the small business owner who is good at what they do, but needs a little help understanding the figures and what they mean. It will also help you to recognise and implement several ways of increasing real profit in your business. Andrew Scowcroft has run his own training and consultancy business since 2001, specialising in leadership development and business management. This is his fourth management book; the first three covering managing people, influencing skills, and presenting with confidence. He has also published a travel book reflecting on the culture clashes he experiences during his regular business trips to India.

Strategic Design: 8 Essential Practices Every Strategic Designer Must Master

The role of design professionals’ in innovation is growing towards a more strategic one. They are no longer just executors of new product and/or service design briefs but are increasingly involved in the crafting of these briefs and in the strategic decisions leading to these briefs. In order to effectively play this role, design professionals need to master a set of strategic practices – i.e., routinized actions and ways of working. However, since the strategic role of designers is a relatively new development, many designers lack knowledge on specific practices for acting effectively on a strategic level in innovation projects. This book proposes eight strategic design practices for design professionals who seek to grow or have already grown into a more strategic role in innovation. The practices are explained through tools and methods, and through case examples in which companies and designers have effectively used them. Additionally the book provides a set of guidelines that will enable design professionals to easily and quickly apply these practices in their next strategic design project.

Untapped: Break through the fear & grow your revenue from existing clients

In 2021, when the economy was at its toughest, I took 100 sceptical firms and within 30 days, I helped them to grow their collective revenue by over £1million, from the clients they already had, for the work they were already doing.

I helped them to overcome their fear of increasing their client’s fees. I helped them to look at what they had through a different lens. And I laid out and easy-to-follow, proven strategy for having a very straightforward conversation with their clients, with all the techniques and objection-handling scripts they would ever need, to increase their fees with confidence.

I showed them that everything they were looking for, they already had right under their nose, they just had to be trained to see it and to realise its untapped potential. The breakthroughs were immediate, the results were staggering, and the effects have been lasting.

This book outlines that exact journey to help you to achieve those same instant and impactful results, by showing you…

  • How to unlock the full potential one of the greatest assets you have right now… your existing clients.
  • The depth of the problem you face and why it must be overcome… now!
  • Why it’s so hard to overcome this problem, especially for you.
  • The fundamental shifts you have to make in your thinking and your life to succeed.
  • What it takes to make an immediate and lasting breakthrough.
  • How to prepare your thinking for massive success that will deliver profound results across all areas of your business and life.
  • The winning formula for how to increase fees with every client regardless of how difficult you may perceive that to be.
  • How to be courageous and overcome every obstacle you will face along the way.

You don’t have to change the economy, your clients, your location, your qualifications, or your competition to achieve exponential growth… you simply have to change how you see, what you already have.

Financial Management in Construction Contracting

This authoritative text provides a detailed insight into how construction companies manage their finances at both corporate and project level. It will guide students and practitioners through the complexities of the financial reporting of construction projects within the constraints of accepted accounting practice. The book is written for non-accountants and from a contractor’s perspective and is equally relevant to subcontractors and main contractors.

The authors examine the relationship between the external annual accounts and the internal cost-value reconciliation process. CVR is covered in depth and the authors consider issues such as interim payments, subcontract accounts, contractual claims, final accounts, cash flow management and the reporting of the physical and financial progress of contracts.

A broad perspective of all the financial aspects of contracting is taken along with related legal issues and the authors explain how things operate in the ‘real world’. They describe good practice in financial control while at the same time being honest about some of the more questionable practices that can – and do – happen. The approach taken is unique as the financial management of construction projects is considered from the perspective of the contractor’s quantity surveyor. The book deals with the real issues that surveyors have to address when using their judgment to report turnover, profitability, cash flow, and work in progress on projects and the financial problems faced by subcontractors are frankly and pragmatically explored.

The payment and notice requirements of the Construction Act are explained in detail and relevant provisions of JCT2011, NEC3, ICC, DOM/1 and other standard contracts and subcontracts are also covered.

Financial Management in Construction Contracting addresses the wide variety of external factors that influence how construction companies operate, including government policy, banking covenants and the financial aspects of supply chain management. Cost reporting systems are described and real-life examples are used to illustrate cost reports, accrual systems and how computerised systems can be employed to provide the QS with information that can be audited.

Examples drawn from practice demonstrate how work-in-progress (WIP) is reported in contracting. Cost value reconciliation reports are featured and the book demonstrates how adjustments are made for overmeasure, undermeasure, subcontract liabilities and WIP as well as explaining the processes that contractors use when analysing external valuations.

This is the ideal core text for final year degree and post-graduate level modules on Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management and Project Management courses and will provide an invaluable source of reference for quantity surveyors and others who may be engaged in the financial management of construction projects.

The book’s companion website at www.wiley.com/go/rossfinancialmanagement offers invaluable resources for students and lecturers as well as for practising construction managers:

  • end-of-chapter exercises + outline answers
  • PowerPoint slides for each chapter
  • ideas for discussion topics
  • links to useful websites

Valuations for Financial Reporting in the United Kingdom: Real Estate and Other Tangible Assets

All publicly listed firms in the UK have to produce financial statements in accordance with IFRS, and many other firms do so from choice. However, smaller entities can use simpler UK standards. The public sector also has separate standards, which although largely based on IFRS have some significant variations, especially in the way in which assets have to be measured. This Briefing explains the required valuation bases under both IFRS and the UK standards and compares and contrasts these as appropriate.

For undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in comparative and international aspects of financial reporting.

Learn the foundational concepts of international financial reporting

Comparative International Accounting, 14th Edition, by Nobes and Parker explores the conceptual and contextual foundations of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), contrasting them with US generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP). It also examines international differences in IFRS practices and the accounting differences that remain between countries such as China, France, Germany and Japan. Particular attention is paid to the key issues of political lobbying, harmonisation, and the special accounting problems of multinational companies. This book is thoroughly updated for the many changes in accounting and the relevant research published since the 13th edition.

Financial Analysis of Mergers and Acquisitions: Understanding Financial Statements and Accounting Rules with Case Studies

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) reshape the corporate landscape helping companies expand market share and gain a strategic advantage. The ability to understand and analyze these transactions is a crucial skill. The first step in acquiring that skill is being able to gather and analyse information on M&As from public sources, such as financial statements. This textbook helps its readers better analyze M&A transactions using information provided in financial statements. Covering accounting and reporting of consolidations, goodwill, non-controlling interests, step acquisitions, spin-offs, equity carve-outs, joint ventures, leveraged buyouts, disposal of subsidiaries, special purpose entities, and taxes, it focuses on the link between underlying economic events and the information in financial statements and how this link affects the assessment of corporate performance. The first part of the book provides description of the accounting rules governing M&A transactions, while the second part includes cases of M&A transactions. Each case focuses on a different element of an M&A transaction, and it is followed by a detailed solution with a complete analysis. Unlike other books in this field, this textbook focuses exclusively on accounting and financial analysis for graduate and upper undergraduate level courses in financial analysis, corporate finance, and financial accounting.
